Introduction of Geology

Geology is derived form the greek word,Geo means earth and logy means study of.Geology is the branch of science that deals with the study of surface of earth,physical history and structure of earth.It is also concerned with in study of rock of which it is composed of and the process by which they change over time.Geology also studies history all of life that's ever lived or still living in our earth today.


Geology can be varied and people study all sorts of different things.for eg:

  • Natural Hazards- like volcano,earthquake
  • The earth interior-Inside of the earth is made form core,mantle and the crust.
  • Paleontology-study of fossils
  • Resources-Oil and gas exploration
  • Space Exploration
I am going to discuss about career in Geology.Career in geology is one of the most important question which is boggling in every student's mind who is doing his/her bachelors of science or masters in science.

What do people do who study geology?

There are a lot of career option for geologist in field.There are some major branch of geology.
  1. Geochemistry
  2. Paleontology
  3. Sedimentology
I am going to discuss briefly about these major branches.

Geochemistry:

Victor moritz Gold Schmist known as father of geochemistry.It is the study of structure,process,composition and other physical facts of earth.It includes the distribution of chemical element in rock and minerals as well as movement of these element into soil and water system.
A geochemist job is to study the rock have an of liquid,gases and minerals and make informed decision based on what they learn.

Paleontology:

George Cuvior,was a french naturalist a zoologist,referred to the "founding father of paleontology".
Paleontology is the branch of geology that deals with the study of fossils to classify organism and study of interactions with each other and their environment.

Career Option as a paleontologist offers several career opportunities.The most common career paths are teaching,working in a museum or as a monitor for an oil company.

Sedimantology:

Henry Clifton Sorby(1826-1908) was known as father of sedimentology.Sedimentology is the branch of geology that deals with the study of sediments such as sand,silt,clay and the process that result in their formation(erosion and weathering) transport,deposition and diagenesis.
Sedimentologist does the investigations of the origin and characterities of sediments deposite and sedimentary rocks that form from them.

History of Physical Geology
